Friday Box Office: 'Apes' rise to great numbers, 'Change-Up' doesn't

Looks like the Apes not only are taking over the world, they're taking over the box office too. Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Fox's critically acclaimed reboot of the long-running franchise took in $19.8 million at the Friday box office. Predictions said that the film, made for $93 million, would gross $30-35 million, but The Hollywood Reporter says it now has a shot at a $50 million opening. Groups of all ages showed up for the film and more women than expected showed up as well, consulting for 44% of the audience.

That wasn't the case for The Change-Up. Universal's body-switching comedy, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman, only grossing $4.7 million. The film, made for $52 million, could open with a tepid $13-14 million. It could also be an indication the R-rated comedy genre has probably lost its edge, considering that its been booming at the box office this summer. The film is however tied with another Universal picture, Cowboys and Aliens, which fell 64% on its second week, so it could rise to third place by the time the weekend's over. Both were no match for Sony's The Smurfs, which held on to second place, grossing $6 million for a domestic gross of $61.2 million.
