News, News, News- Green Lantern 2 Still Happening
Green Lantern is a bomb. Sorry to start it off so harsh, but it's true. The film not only received poor reviews from critics (26% on RT says it all) and it broke fanboys' hearts (Not so much mine, but still), it also underperformed at the box office only earning $155 million worldwide against a $200 million budget. It did badly in North America and did even worse overseas. That's why it's somewhat of a shock to people that Warner Bros. is going ahead with a sequel. However, the studio will go in an entirely new direction. Warner Bros. Film Group President Jeff Robinov gave an update on the sequel to Hero Complex. He says, “We had a decent opening [of $53 million] so we learned there is an audience. To go forward we need to make it a little edgier and darker with more emphasis on action…. And we have to find a way to balance the time the movie spends in space versus on Earth.” In other words, they wanna go all "Dark Knight" with it. Green Lantern 2 already has a draft written by Greg Berlanti, Michael Green, and Marc Guggenheim, the guys responsible for the first. Sounds good, but I don't know if I'm truly convinced. It also sounds like they're not going to bring director Martin Campbell back. Apparently, the studio's executives weren't pleased with his work in the film, so maybe they should start hiring directors that have a better vision of the superhero than Campbell probably did. Not that I'm dissing him or anything. He did bring great films like The Mask of Zorro and Casino Royale. We'll see what happens in the upcoming months. Warner will probably plan it for a 2013 release if they start production by next year, I predict. They'll also move forward with other DC Comics superhero properties which include the 2013 Superman reboot, Man of Steel, and after a possible GL2 later that year, they'll even work on The Flash as well as the Justice League movie.
